Tonight we’re watching “The Passion Of The Christ”. There are parts of this movie that I want to turn away, close my eyes and not watch. But, I force myself to keep my eyes on what is happening. I want to be reminded of the significance of this day.

Thank You Jesus for enduring the pain of beatings, carrying the cross and ultimately your death.

What Do You See?

What Do You See?

I see the beauty of God’s creation surrounded and protected by thorns preventing it from destruction or harm.

Just as this flower is protected are we not as well?

For you will go out with joy And be led forth with peace; The mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, And all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thorn bush the cypress will come up, And instead of the nettle the myrtle will come up, And it will be a memorial to the LORD, For an everlasting sign which will not be cut off. Isaiah 55:12-13

35 Grilled Cheese

35 Grilled Cheese

Toward evening the disciples approached him. “We’re out in the country and it’s getting late. Dismiss the people so they can go to the villages and get some supper.” But Jesus said, “There is no need to dismiss them. You give them supper.’ All we have are five loaves of bread and two fish,” they said. Jesus said, “Bring them here.” Then he had the people sit on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples. The disciples then gave the food to the congregation. They all ate their fill. They gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. About five thousand were fed.  Matthew 14: 15-21

Did you ever wonder how you were ever going to make something work?  Did you ever wonder “Will I have enough?”

gourmet-grilled-cheese-2One day last month lunchtime in Haiti was grilled cheese.  I asked Dan what I could do to help.  He looked at me and replied “Well we need to make 35 grilled cheese sandwiches.  If you can do it with 1/2 stick of butter that would be awesome.”  I discovered how the disciples must have felt!  What-you want us to feed all these people with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread?  What you want me to make 35 grilled cheese sandwiches for 20 high school students with 1/2 stick of butter? Panic set in, deep breath, think about how mom used to make them and pray that the butter would stretch.  A half hour later we set out 2 full trays of 35 grilled cheese sandwiches to fill 24 hungry missionaries.  I know a miracle didn’t happen that day.  It was only ingenuity and probably luck.  But….

Did you ever wonder how you were ever going to make something work? Did you ever wonder “Will I have enough?”

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.  Phillippians 4: 19

One of my very favorite bands is Sons of Korah.  In times of challenge I find their songs encouraging.  In times of sorrow I find their songs to be comforting.  In times of joy I find their songs bring even more joy.  In times of busyness I find their songs bring peace.  One more way to immerse yourself in the book of Psalms.

Stations of the Heart

Stations of the Heart

As I was cleaning out books I came across this devotional booklet by Herbert Brokering.  I’ve been a fan of his for many years and our hearts were saddened when he died in 2009.  I remember first meeting him at Mt. Gilead camp when I was in high school.  His passion was an inspiration for my own spiritual journey.  I remember scouring garbage heaps in Minneapolis with him as he looked for what we considered “junk” but he could envision creating something absolutely amazing!  I remember looking for another one of his books filled with songs, prayers, thoughts.  And so when I came across this devotional booklet, one I’d been intending to use but hadn’t so far, I knew I needed to open it up & catch up to where we are in this season of Lent.  Even to this day he continues to inspire and push me along on my spiritual journey,  touching my heart & soul, putting into words what is on so many of our hearts but we don’t know how to say it, and opening those dark spaces that sometimes take us down into the valley.  Are you looking for your “station of the heart”?

On My Knees

On My Knees

I’ve been brought to my knees more than once this summer, incessantly praying, trusting and having faith. Hope, relief, encouragement, thanks come with a simple text and phone call. And how timely my Psalm 89 devotional reading is for today.

I will sing of the Lord ‘s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations

God is good and gracious.
